See the Fejee Mermaid once owned by the Greatest showman on earth PT Barnum
as portrayed by Hugh Jackman
And from the greatest showman to one of
the greatest gambling stories ever
Is William McKenzie sitting inside this tomb on Rodney Street clutching a winning hand of cards?
William McKenzie the first international railway engineer
The story often told is that McKenzie was a keen gambler and left instructions that he should be entombed above ground within a pyramid, sitting upright at a card table and clutching a winning hand of cards in one hand and a glass of whiskey in the other hand.
So what was the reason behind this? McKenzie becoming an atheist on the premature death of his sweetheart and leading a life of drinking and (successful) gambling. One night, he meets his match playing poker with a mysterious stranger by the name of Madison. McKenzie loses literally all of his money, and Madison invites him to
play one last hand. McKenzie protests that he has nothing left to gamble with, but Madison asks “What about your soul?” McKenzie initially refuses, now suspecting who ‘Mr Madison’ really is. Madison challenges him that if he is an atheist then he cannot believe in the reality of the soul, and therefore has nothing to lose. McKenzie finally agrees, and of course loses the game. Madison says that he will take McKenzie’s soul when his body lies in the ground.
McKenzie believing Madison was the Devil ensured that his body was never committed to the earth thus remaining above ground as a means of cheating Satan out of claiming his immortal soul.
When I was performing my All in all it's just another trick in the wall show I received a phone call a week before the a event, asking if I was going to perform McKenzie's gambling scene, to which I replied "yes". The voice on the other end said that they had footage of what was in the pyramid, obtained by using an endoscope camera. I asked "Was he above the ground cheating the Devil out of his soul?" They said "See for yourself when you receive the footage." They anonymously sent it to me and I showed it to the crowd on the night of the event.
